Barley is considered to be the first cereal grain cultivated by humans. It’s medicinal and food use dates back to 7000 BC. Barley is a proud member of the grass family and is, in fact, a major cereal consumed all over the world. Barley grass is the leaf of the barley plant. Historically, the plant species was used in the treatment of skin, liver, blood, and GI disorders. Ancient Greeks used the mucilage derived from the cereal to treat GI inflammations. Gladiators ate barley for strength and stamina. It is a common ingredient at juice shops and health stores, frequently appearing alongside other greens like kale, spinach, and wheatgrass. It’s often dubbed a super food and used as a supplement to boost weight loss, enhance immune function, and support overall health. The barley grass contains beta carotene, Vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, Pantothenic acid, and Folic acid. Minerals present include Potassium, Calcium, Iron, Phosphorus, and Magnesium. Other constituents are Chlorophyll, Amino acids, Protein, Fiber, and Enzymes. Cobalamin or vitamin B12 deficiency may be avoided in vegetarian diets by supplementation with barley grass. No wonder then, that barley Grass juice is known to have been used for centuries to increase strength and endurance.
